Cathedral Janitor by Arvilla Fee

Ralph

Cathedral Janitor

the only sound

in the stained-glass stillness

is the swish swish of my broom

but this is what I love—

the coolness of ancient walls

the way the organ glistens

in streams of morning sun

i see a small movement

out of the corner of my eye

i know it’s him, come to see

come to beg a bite of cheese

and God help me, I do feed,

adoring the quiver of whiskers

tiny hands clasped together

i should report the rodent

but i don’t have the heart—

not when his sweet face

implores me to see him

as a member of this place;

he requires nothing but a nibble and promises to pray for me.
