all day rain

now that I no longer know

you

raising their hands

to the rain

skeleton elms

a rain squall extinguishes

the cherry blossoms

                     …petrichor 

alone

in the circumference

of rain 

rain lash

seven pelicans

right into the storm 

scars

rains slashes

the window

storm over the Atlantic rains dissolve the horizon

acute angles

a southern gale blasts long mountain

with rain

bitter tea

sinking down

in all day rain

all there is rain on rain

Snow Haiku

seven crows 

against an altostratus sky 

blue snow 

nightsnow 

I fall 

into deep time 

all morning to travel 

from the stream to the spruce 

snowshimmer

snow arriving at the disappearing mountain 

still 

blue 

the Appalachians in snow 

cyan hills 

the snowwind marks 

our distance  

…a dream of falling snow moon

blank sun 

a black vulture teeters 

over snowworld 

the snowshadow 

of a double-crowned spruce 

limpid sky 

second snow 

three white birds cutting 

across the white pines 

the weight 

of the blue hour’s descent 

snowlight

Appalachian Mountains

Mountain Haiku

last warmth 

cumulus clouds billowing 

beyond the Appalachians  

long mountain 

a relentless wind 

shatters the sky 

in the bend 

of the blackbird’s wings 

the Appalachians 

the blue 

of the bare trees 

distant mountains 

slowly grinding down 

the Appalachians 

black vultures 

live wire 

this light 

behind the Appalachians 

tumulus of the sleeping giants 

                                     Appalachians in the distance  

blackthorn blossoms 

the mountain again becomes 

clouds 

dawn striking 

the new mountain 

thunderheads 

upslope fog also the mountain 

just beyond 

long mountain 

dame’s rocket  

how many times can I say the blue in the blue mountain

Summer Haiku

sun dogs 

his blond head disappearing 

over the horizon  

slowly 

then all at once 

the summer storm 

among them 

I become them 

the red pines 

deerpath 

the white-tails 

laying out a city 

deeper and deeper 

into the electric cyan 

goldenrod stowaway 

at dawn 

above the sun 

the eagle’s breast 

yard sales 

the ebb and flow 

of dandelions 

double daylily 

the crow 

into her shadow 

a season 

of facing inward 

lady’s tresses 

I’ll be with you 

shortly

dissolving

—the heat! 

surprised

she decides 

to wait

Flower Haiku 

saffron robes

the daylily’s shadow

shifts to the infinite

 

thistleseed shadow

at the pace of vulture shadow

high noon

 

cat’s ears and chicory

the evening star appears

in the indigo sky

 

last light

an evening primrose becomes

the center of the universe

 

mother reminds me

to keep watching the deep sky

artichoke blossoms

 

dandelions

just because

he can’t control them 

 

the flower whose name I do not know yellow leaves

 

not really

from around here either
