Snow Night by David Henson

Faina Oktyabr

Snow Night

The wind presses

its palms to the glass.

We unfold wool

blankets in front of the picture

window, tuck in

and fill with sleep

as the fork in the oak

fills with snow. My bundled

dreams romp through

drifts, return blowing

into their cupped hands.

I wake with my fingers

in your hair.

Polishing the Car In October by David Henson

Sergej

Polishing the Car In October

Back aching,

hand numb

and gooey,

hood and two

fenders yet

to go,

I stand

and take

a break

-- admire

the rusty

leaves.

Lake Treasure by David Henson

Ayman Muhammad Elshahat

Lake Treasure

Twinged with disappointment

my hike through the woods

didn’t reveal a pileated,

I carry the scent of pines

to the water where a squawking goose

beats hard, tips left, slants down.

for lake treasure —

rest, food, maybe a mate.

The bird extends its legs, flares wings,

splashes, flaps, skids

and glides to a gentle stop

before dunking its head

and pointing its rump skyward

— a bow for a perfect 10.

I refrain from applause,

respecting the quiet

of this arena,

and in that moment

wish for the bird

something precious

as it’s given me.

Compulsions by David Henson

Jeremy Bishop

Compulsions

I’ve told you this story many times, but you can’t hear it often enough. It begins with the day we felt a compulsion to dig — as though the earth itself had whispered to us. We dug anywhere a hole could go—yards, parks, highway medians—with every kind of shovel, but never mechanical tools. The compulsion demanded our hearts, hands and backs.

We dug under sunlight, moonlight and starlight. Holes the size of teacups, buckets and bushel baskets. We dug until we were ready to drop — then took a break and dug some more. We endured blisters, strains, the occasional sliced toe. Nothing stopped us.

When we were running out of places to dig, the compulsion vanished. We were left in a daze, bewildered, not knowing what to do next. We didn’t have to wonder long because a compulsion to plant embraced us.

And that, my children, is how the Great Forest of the Earth was born.

May you always feel a compulsion to nurture it.
