Winging It Through Winter by Bonnie Demerjian

Darya Sannikova

Winging It Through Winter

These are the cold days, abundant in darkness.

Learn from the birds the ways of survival —

eat, gorge even, and cache what you hold dear.

Your small soul will need this fuel

to satisfy the day and feed the future.

Dress for the weather. Hide in your feathers.

Pull your down bag around your head

to shelter the smoldering heart from

ranting wind and discouraging wet.

Resist with others, your sisters and brothers.

Huddle and outwit winter as one warm mass.

Shiver with passion or sink into torpor. Wait.

Slow beat, slow breath.

Then shake it off and explore. Be a pioneer in love when

the present way is the death way.

You’ll be a stranger in a foreign land.

Make it your own.

Today by Bonnie Demerjian

Natalia Olivera Amapola

Today

after Billy Collins

Today, such a wonder — a baby stares with shining attention

turning, turning its head, plump with someday

though all is now, as

in unhurried dance, palm revolves in thrall to the moment,

life lines at the ready and already inscrutable, while

delicate nails gleam like shells. On unmarked sand

not yet inscribed by the ocean’s future and in

awesome innocence, unblinking wakefulness command —

do thou likewise:

stop the world and plunge into the gaze because

today is just that kind of day.

Humblebee By Bonnie Demerjian

Humblebee

I wake from a swarming dream to find myself the patron saint of bumblebees.

Genus Bombus: a perfect name for one once thought too ponderous to fly.

She’s roused herself from hibernation and, with the meandering intent of a dirigible, noses the garden for first flowers.

I could hug her furred coat. She won’t sting a human, you know.

Now, groggy on this April morning, she’s trapped herself inside my window

keening a song of distress.

I hear her prayer and set her free.

We all can be a saint for someone.
