SAVOURING NIRVANA by Devayani Anvekar

Kavinda Bandara

SAVOURING NIRVANA

Down where a broad main road cuts past a slender byroad of a semi-urban town, where people, like the rest on Earth, strive to feel happiness. Know love. Experience satisfaction. On all weekdays, except Tuesday, you will see her there.
As industrious as any lean bee, you will see her filling its beehive. Two or three times a day, she scoops out colorless water with her right hand from a discolored purple plastic container held in her other hand, and sprinkles glistening drops of clear water onto her bundles of dill, spinach, reddish fenugreek leaves, and other vegetables that tend to droop and look pale. As the sun turns bright lemon yellow and moves higher, higher, to linger an hour or two over sweat-spilling heads.
She has all her vegetables enlivened, looking green and fresh, piled on her four-wheel vegetable cart. Parked beside a laterite-stone compound wall of an old house with a red-tiled rooftop gone blackish, and its view is half obscured by mango, jackfruit, and jambul trees with hefty arms spread above it and over its front garden, where orange, red, and yellow marigolds and white, pink, maroon dahlias bloom. Koel’s shrill calls are heard, and grey squirrels like sprites are seen running about. Where black crows caw and nest, green parrots like ripening mangoes rest, perched on the trees' high branches.
You realize.
You need glistening drops of humility sprinkled on you to enliven you. See you care and look around. Smile. Especially to those who threw away and lost theirs. Hold no resentment. Feel sorry for those who refuse to smile back. For they have dropped their smiles and dropped their joy.
The satisfaction. Hope. That rises in you, to see the world freed of poverty. Misery. Ugliness. On seeing smooth, broad, safe, clean roads and footpaths leading to aesthetically built and well-maintained houses, buildings, gardens, and parks. Huge trees cover and shelter large swathes of open land, hills, and valleys. Found in little things as well: life's ecstasy in small things, its handsomeness in tiny details, that highlight its greater grandeur.
As in.
Aesthetically outlined, as with an artist’s black ink and round brush, saffron monarch butterflies. Bees with black and yellow bands. Hovering over sunken sprigs laden with stout bundles of white mogras, tempt you to softly clasp them and raise them close to your nostrils and inhale slowly.
The sight of orange-yellow sun rays gleaming through droplets shines like lit lamps on red hibiscus petals, green grass leaves, and just-washed windowpanes. The little laughs, small smiles. On seeing blue water ripple and glister across a still lake or a water bowl holding it, securing it.
The sight of people gathered around chaat carts parked beside busy roads and street corners, shaded by large peepal, banyan, and dainty gulmohar trees that people cared to keep and see grow unrestrained. Dropping pani-puri, bhel puri, aloo tikki, and other spicy chaats handed out to them onto their salivating tongue, and chat. Their eyes turned moist, gleaming, as if they were savoring nirvana.

A CROWD by Devayani Anvekar

Pille Kirsi

A CROWD

of like and unlike minds and thoughts,

ways, taste, like ants march along a lengthy

path across hills. Foothills. High mountains.

Steep valleys. Vast deserts. Barren lands.

Crowded cities. Noisy towns. Abandoned

desolated villages. Beside green lakes.

Blue rivers. Calm seas. Roaring oceans.

A lengthy life. A lengthy pilgrimage.

Each heaving carrying, bearing, heavy

burdens of disbeliefs or of beliefs ardent.

Obstinate. Faith in the same God or a million

various Gods. Of one’s own liking or in

one’s own image.

In search of a path. A purpose. To move

on. Go on. Walk on. Feel whole. One

with all.

Not all. Everything you. For you.

You alone. All by yourself. Alone.

Lost.

Like a sole survivor. Winner. On an

immense island.

Alone.

With growing illusions, delusions.

Wild

despair. Enveloping darkness.

Alone.

In search of company.

A crowd.

In search of Sun. Bright rays. Light.

Uncover lightness. Brightness.

Light, slow, floating hours. Days. Life.

Time.

Unburden self. Reveal an unburdened

mind.

IN DIRE NEED by Devayani Anvekar

Cottonbro Studios

IN DIRE NEED

To have some fruitful talks. Often seated here

in this unpolished, grey, granite stone garden

bench. No giant foams of snow from heaven’s

sky comes down and covers it in December.

Tanned crisp leaves in October. Soft violet-blue

flowers during May June monsoon. Strewn on

it by branches of jarul trees that house it in their

cool hut of calm shade. Crushed minced under

often shifted weight of your bottom.

As your fingers graze the screen of your

smartphone glow like a wizard’s crystal ball,

foretell things, the wizard commands it to.

You akin to a brown sparrow land on dirt and

speck the surface for worms and seeds. Now

and then raising its little head and looking

hither thither.

You wait to meet and talk with others. Clear

your mind. Listen to others.

Know if others mind too, similarly confused.

Others too, like you, trying to understand and

know their innermost blurred part and retrieve,

embrace. Their innate munificent nature. Like

a white riot lotus, out of black opaque waters.

That baffling resilient silent soul. In all.

You engage others in conversations, talks, that

aren't always fruitful: talks that further existing

confusions, create additional misgivings, and

dire conclusions, nasty misunderstandings.

Touchy egos hurt, bruised. Look like slashed

trees.

Painful to watch.

You relentlessly belittled. You relentlessly

belittle others.

You're pretty much aware of conversations, talks,

don’t generally turn out to be pleasant. Except,

when it is to joke, make fun, or plot against a

person both despise.

Yet, you go to meet, and you meet and talk and talk

and talk and talk. Never get to the point. Afraid

it might turn hostile. You might get further misheard

or worse. You may again further mishear and

misunderstand others. Start another acrimonious

argument. Witness more peeved minds and wounded

egos ROAR.

Suffer more.

Severe headaches. Brain more tender, sore. Head

throb, trill more.

Thrashed. Armed with more pain, regrets.

Why do you open your mouth and air your views,

doubts? You wonder. Go to meet. Discuss serious

things seriously. Why don’t you just joke, gossip?

Discuss lipsticks, mascaras, face scrubs, you like.

Shampoos you love.

Be of amicable nature and spot your place. Joyfully

given to you. By benevolent mother nature. As well

by fellow human beings, difficult as tangled threads

to untangle. Free. Behold each heart revived. Revel.

MY LIBERATION LOVE by Devayani Anvekar

Tim Mossholder

MY  LIBERATION  LOVE

a golden eagle. Perched on a broken

trunk of a Sal tree. Wakes up.

Raises its head. Its eyes wide. Alert.

Faces the endless blue above and

all round.

Stretches its wide arms. Its feathers

glistening. Streaks of light pouring over

its majestic form, cutting through dense

clouds split each ray into saffron yellow

hues blend with blue.

Takes off. Soars high. Like an air flight on

scheduled time. Flies.

Flies far. Come to me. Takes me. In its

wings. In its flight. Into boundlessness.

Eternity.

Felt.

Not in words or acts. But like luminous

light from street light poles that guide at night.

In its very flight. Freedom.

Free. Freed from the belly of delusions

like a python’s entwine and devour.

Bathes me clean. And with a soft breeze’s

grace, hugs. Enclasps me. "Let me. Know

you.

Embrace me."
