Going Home
It’s 5 o’clock. The buildings pour
the tired workers out their doors.
The workers who walk home now drag
themselves to where the sidewalk ends.
They drop frustrations, fears,
and setbacks on the ground.
Each barefoot step reverses hours,
days, then weeks, then months, then years.
Burden-free, they run through mud to catch
the tadpoles in the puddles left by rain.
Children jump into the stream,
hide-and-seek among the trees.
They hopscotch, jump rope, kick a can
until their mothers call them home to eat.
