Days Gone By

No more skating rush on neighborhood rink chasing puck

on a cold, cold night, frostbite nipping young nose.

No more hard study of hardback books in library, in dorm,

in cafe with friends, eagerly finding out, finding my way.

No more exulting run in deep outfield to track down softball’s

long flight, snagging in outstretched glove, triumphant.

No more wandering around campus at night, finding faith in the dark

of a chapel, or throwing up under a tree after a town bar outing.

No more low swipe of forceful foot to kick soccer ball into the heart

of guarded net on rugged pitch, joyful in play.

Now I am in a different place, an older place, yet young in heart

still, with heartfelt thanksgiving.

  1. I only had one year of college but this brought me back to that time! It's a welcomed memory as I sit here in my pale brown cubicle of a pale brown corporate office job.
