poor pilgrim by Tom Zimmerman

poor pilgrim

eyes ears nose mouth these body parts i squeak

so clean   //   the windows to the world of things   //

& no ideas but there one poet says   //

another writes that there’s an ear within

the genitals a one-eyed bear between

the legs   //   allusions dog my brainspace windows

floor to ceiling where i sit   //   eyes are

the windows to the soul i heard that from

my mother first & thinking of her smooths

my thought i think   //   were she alive i’d write

her this   //   in sun in snow in ebb & flow

the passions in & out the window go   //

time’s thievery’s a beggar man’s belief

poor pilgrim isn’t love worth all the grief
