Travis Goes Fishing
During high school, lunch was always the highlight of my day. I got to kick back, relax, take my mind off of school, and hang out with my friends. In my senior year, my boyfriend Ben and I sat with some of the other cross-country kids, stuffed around two tables in the lunchroom, or at the picnic tables outside on a nice day. One day, Travis was eating a bag of Goldfish and found one that did not have a smile on it. He was devastated. He looked at the package and saw the Goldfish company's number. The logical next step was to call. So Travis called in his complaint.
“Hello?”
“Uh, hi, yeah, I found a goldfish in my bag that didn’t have a smile on it.”
“Ok, do you have the product number?”
Travis had to take his phone away from his face to hide his snicker. No way they were taking him seriously right now. He gave them the number, and the conversation continued. “Ok, sir, what exactly is your complaint?”
“My Goldfish didn’t have a smile on it. But the whole motto is ‘The snack that smiles back.’ My Goldfish isn’t smiling back at me, and it makes me really sad.”
At this point, I couldn’t hear the rest of the conversation, but it appeared that the person on the other end of the phone had gotten tired of the joke and stopped taking Travis seriously. They hung up, and everyone let out the laughs they had been holding in during the call. Of course, he tried to call again, but after the second call, he thought better of it. “I’m gonna get blocked by Goldfish,” Travis said.
We all laughed, still getting over the fact that Travis had done it in the first place. Then, of course, Ben had to join the fun, too, so he picked up his phone and called the company as well. This was the final straw for our table; no one could keep it together after that.
It’s just a small snapshot into my life in high school, but these are memories that will hold a special place in my heart forever. I may have had some crazy friends, but the laughs were worth it. Who else can boast that their table called the Goldfish Company three times in one day?
