The Mirror by Kelly Doheney

Mariana Blue

The Mirror

Gazing at my reflection,

I blink and wipe my eyes.

For what I saw in the mirror

was a face in disguise.

A wall, a fortress, a self-made prison.

My reflection is a lie.

It’s the protection that I seek.

Will freedom happen before I die?

My reflection becomes blurred.

A shadow, a faceless image forms.

For even to me, I am a stranger.

I need to conform.

The world never accepted who I really am.

My family, especially, labeled me “crazy.”

Disabled, sick, unable to function,

and my reflection becomes hazy.

But suddenly, a new reflection is seen.

A long-forgotten familiarity.

Glimpses of authenticity look back.

This is my true reality.

Do I dare remove the mask I wear?

Do I allow this reflection to shine?

Am I strong enough to disregard others’ words,

and claim what is mine?
