October Afternoon
light the color
of aged butter
and all the world
becomes bread,
communion,
the whole loaf,
rusty leaves,
dying grass,
urgent flights
of geese,
waxworks
on lifeless vines,
rodents seeking
warmer homes
O you eat, you eat,
the fading sun
forms silhouettes
of bare branches
moon rising
like an empty plate
