Annabelle and Barney
Alright, here’s another one. This is of our dog Barney, who was a mix with a whole lot of hound in him. He liked to chase rabbits and squirrels. He had a lot of love to give. A big-hearted old boy. And this is a photo of our daughter Annabelle, who was named after her great-grandmother. Anyway, this picture was taken around the time she graduated from high school. As you can see, it was a staged photo that she planned all by herself. It was taken on a country road outside of town, around noon on a spring day, 'cause she wanted the sunlight and the shadows just right. Some people think she’s walking toward our home, but we lived in town next to the hardware store that was started by my grandfather and his brother. Anyway, Anna was not only interested in the light and dark in the photo, but she had a lot to say about the meaning of the road and fences and trees, and the colors of everything, especially the yellow line which she said was a symbol of optimism, joy, creativity and the presence of God. All that’s true, I guess, but as the years have passed, and I look at the photo now, all I can see is the vanishing point in the distance that she’s walking toward.
