Modern Mite by Jeff Burt

Modern Mite

Poverty’s relative,

the fixed income of joy

depreciated by grief’s inflation,

the woman harmed by domestic violence

who seeks shelter for herself, her children,

who loses not only love

and companionship, but in sleight of hand,

her swarm of funds has turned

into a lone dove that she releases,

leaving her hands free

to clutch the buttons on her coat.
