Today
after Billy Collins
Today, such a wonder — a baby stares with shining attention
turning, turning its head, plump with someday
though all is now, as
in unhurried dance, palm revolves in thrall to the moment,
life lines at the ready and already inscrutable, while
delicate nails gleam like shells. On unmarked sand
not yet inscribed by the ocean’s future and in
awesome innocence, unblinking wakefulness command —
do thou likewise:
stop the world and plunge into the gaze because
today is just that kind of day.
