Bystanders
We watch the just-born giraffe work
hard to stand, falling over
again, and again, way ahead of dread
under the attentive, helpless
bending necks of her family
she has all the fuel she needs
to try and try
as though each waiting step
knows it is the necessary part
of a mainspring
greater than itself
to stoke our reassurance
